Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the ability to challenge specific calls made by the chair umpire, following the protocol already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
