In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Broader Government Discussions Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
