Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
