An defense minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the possible security risks associated with Chinese cars, and staff have been told to avoid discussing secret information in all cars.
Safety Guidance for Defence Staff
During a recently aired appearance on LBC, a defence minister addressed reports that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to talk about classified information while riding in Chinese vehicles.
He stated that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but emphasised that safety is a concern in every contemporary vehicles.
We have a collection of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their car, not to have conversations at a secret level in any vehicle, because of the increasing threats of surveillance that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential conversations in protected areas. This is a wise and sensible thing for everyone concerned about security.
When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”
Wider Security Background
The announcement follows reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable buses and bring chaos to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russian spy ship was reportedly shining lasers at RAF pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.
The wider defence environment underscores the importance of strong protocols and vigilance in every aspects of government activities, including vehicle usage to communication habits.
