European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
